People Who Inspire Me, Entry Four

There is no one in the world I admire more than Captain Morita/森田釣竿 船長, and the members of Gyoko/漁港. I grew up in Connecticut, near the ocean, and fishing was a big part of my childhood. I don't live close to the ocean anymore, but I still eat anything that comes out of it and I'm always looking for something I haven't tried yet. Japan opened up a whole new world: so many fish I had never heard of or tasted! Whenever I go to Japan, I visit the Urayasu fish market because it reminds me of where I came from. My father always gutted the fish we caught in the kitchen, so I know what happens to fish before it gets to the table. I know you shouldn't waste fish, or any food.

Of course, I always look for Captain Morita/森田釣竿 船長 at the fish market. Because he is my hero, and I believe in what he and Gyoko/漁港 are fighting for. Know what you eat, know where it comes from.

In America, we often don't know where our food comes from. We don't know what it eats, before we eat it. I know I eat things that aren't good for me. I should eat more fish, more vegetables. It's hard, when there are no fresh fish markets where I live, and the stores make it more and more expensive to eat healthy. But I can try harder. I don't eat hamburgers any more, and I buy frozen fish at the Asian grocery store. I eat more rice, and less pasta. And I will try harder.

So, what does this have to do with fiction writing, what do fish have to do with horror stories? I believe that whenever something inspires our souls, it will inspire us as writers. It will make us better writers.

What's this? A serious post? *gasps* Someone's kidnapped Natalie. HELP! HELP!

Just toolin'. Great post, and I agree with everything you say about not wasting food and eating healthily. And yeah, what's good for the body is good for the soul, I can dig that.

I couldn't possibly agree more. It's one of the things that makes me twitchy about America, our complete lack of understanding and respect for our sources of food. It doesn't matter what or whom is to blame, but it can't possibly be a good thing. I don't even know these guys and I now respect them immensely.

You're absolutely right about inspiration, too.

I like some fish if it's cooked right. To me, "cooked right" means trout or catfish battered with cornmeal and fried. That sort of cancels out the healthiness of the fish itself.

I hate wasting food and I hate buying fruits and veggies that are bred not for flavor but for the ability to be shipped long distances and stored for a long time without bruising or going bad. Food should be fresh, local, and delicious.

If you ever make it out this way for a visit, I'll have to hook you up with some seal flipper pie...
